The Frame's The Thing: Choosing The Perfect Frame For Your Art

Blog

You finally have that dream piece of art that you've been eyeing for so long, but now it needs a home. Choosing the right frame for your painting, print, or photograph will go far in how the art is presented and how it will eventually look in your home. Here are just a few pointers on how you can choose the perfect frame for your work of art.

Complementary Colors

One way you can truly make your artwork shine is to choose a frame that is complementary to the art itself. Going with complementary colors is an excellent and simple way to do this. As a rule, greens and reds, oranges and blues, and yellow and purples are considered complementary colors. Colors within this gradient will simply match best with whatever is opposite on the color wheel will help you choose the right hue for your frame. When choosing a color, it's also a wise choice to go with something that won't detract from the art itself. While you do intend for the frame to act as a complement, remember that what is inside is what really counts. Choosing a more subdued version of a complementary color is an excellent way to solve this issue.

Go Opposite

Even though your first inclination when choosing a frame might be to find something similar to the art itself, go a little crazy and choose the exact opposite! Sure, this might sound like a slightly radical idea, but the results can be downright remarkable. The stark contrast of styles can seem jarring at first, but can really make the artwork pop in a way that it can't otherwise. For a rustic landscape that features majestic rolling hills, for instance, a metallic frame would add a bit of an industrial feel that would be captivating. On the other hand, a bright and bold abstract watercolor would benefit from a muted, natural frame. This would allow the beauty of the art itself to shine through as the star of the show.

Frames as an Extension of Art

For those hoping to make an extra bold statement, consider using your picture frames as an extension of the art itself. If you have a modern piece showcasing a pair of bright red lips, for instance, a red frame will help make this work pop even more. This can make for a fun way to extend your image beyond its reach by allowing the frame to act as a way for the art to branch out even further. For a piece that features a geometric black-and-white pattern, on the other hand, a black-and-white patterned frame would work perfectly! This is a fun and interesting way to celebrate the art itself and even make it feel a bit more interactive.
